- Full Artifact Description
- This tapestry-woven textile fragment measures 21.5 cm x 22cm and is a strange mash-up of what seem to be two different fragments. The background of the piece is plain-woven, beige, undyed wool. There no selvedges, but the right hand (proper left) side of the background has a raised, braided strip of supplemental weft in the same undyed wool. The background is decorated with a vining floral design in single-weft tapestry, in dark blue, reddish-pink, medium green, and yellow wool. Weft interlock is used for vertical joins between the design and background (vs. slit tapestry). The background has a large, irregular loss in the center, and into this—and onto the top of the background in some areas—another fabric has been placed. This is fabric has a dark blue, weft-faced ground (blue weft, undyed wool warp) that is decorated with small, fat cross shapes in single-weft tapestry in the colors of pinkish-red, green, yellow, undyed linen, and light blue. Each shape has a central boss of a contrasting color, either red or yellow. There is also a small v-shaped area of undyed linen near the center of the fabric. Most colors and yarns appear very similar to those of the background fabric, although the background has no linen elements, and the warp of this second fabric—when viewed under magnification—is significantly lighter in color and the dark blue is slightly more intense. The pale blue color seen on this added section is also uncommon. The added piece has been stitched in place with modern thread in black and pale pink. It has been placed so that it appears to create the body of an animal—perhaps a quadruped—with an element of the background fabric appearing as the creature’s head, although the original intention of this design element is unclear.
