Full Artifact Description
Tapestry woven textile fragment showing human figures on horseback as well as a standing figure. The main field of the fabric is a medium-brown, weft-faced plain weave (brown wool warp and weft), with the figural decoration in pinkish-red, medium green, beige or light brown (or possibly even undyed yarn), and dark blue or black wool. There are also small areas of decorative weft wrapping in undyed linen; these pick out small, light-colored details; for example, the centers of the small circular blanket designs for the horses. The fragment is highly decorative, with many small details on the figures and horses. The human figures hold various implements, and the horses have decorative bridles and blankets or perhaps armor. The technique is primarily single-weft, needle-woven tapestry. Vertical joins are made primarily using weft-interlock tapestry vs. slit, although both techniques are present. A small section of selvedge is present on the lower left edge (proper right edge) near the standing figure.
