Full Artifact Description
Hollow molded fragment from a double mold in light brown clay (Munsell 7.5 YR 6/4) with molded extremities. The head, arms and feet are missing from the piece but otherwise it is in good condition. The piece represents a figure of nude Aphrodite standing with the right knee flexed. The figure is poised as if the left foot is bearing the weight of the pose with the right foot raised so as to touch the ground with the ball of the foot. The legs are closely placed and part just above the ankles. The left shoulder is dipped and the right shoulder is raised. The pose is that of Aphrodite Aradyomene, i.e. Aphrodite binding her hair. the body is elongated, especially through the legs, and well modelled. Seams are carefully pared and blended into the voluptuous planes of the hips. Only the stubs of the arms remain but these are sealed, indicating that the arms were piece molded and attached to the main figure. The feet were probably piece molded as well.
