Full Artifact Description
Pentelic marble head of the defied Vespasian. Wreathed head. Crow’s feet radiate from outer corners of the eyes. Cheeks are scored by wide modeled furrows. Clusters of curls on either side of high bald brow. Lips faintly smiling. Tight snail-shell curls have drilled centers. Wreath also drilled. Probably part of a relief portrait. Back broken off along clean plane. Face preserved from temple to jaw on right side and mid-ear to jaw on left. Left side shows greater weathering than right. Nose obliterated, but oak leaves discernible at sides. Numerous scratches and chips. Bits of red pozzolana mortar adhere to back of head and some mineral veins on the face.
