Notes
Received Gilbert's letter and is very happy to hear that mother's health is good. Description of the Battle of Culpeper Court House and the subsequent pursuit across the Rapidan River. They arrived back at Culpeper with a "perfect army" of contrabands, about 100 head of cattle, horses, and around 90 prisoners. Coffee, portk, cabbage, apples, and roasted sweet potatoes for breakfast. Have had no frost, but have had cold nights. Discussion about pay. Enlisted as a private at $13/mo., promoted to commissary sergeant at Washington, increasing his wage to $17/mo. At Gettsburg, the Capt. and Lieut. were wounded or taken prisoner and so Henry commanded the company until the Captain recovered. He is now orderly sergeant at $20/mo. Offers thoughts on Rosecrans. Plans to wipe out Copperheadism once the rebellion is stopped. Updates on Phena and George.
