The year again witnessed excellent scholastic work in the field of Lincoln studies. Some of the most notable accomplishments have occurred in the area concerning Lincoln's life before his ascension to the Presidency. Seminal books and articles by Doug Wilson, Bill Beard, Stacey McDermott, and Christopher Schnell have given new and interesting insight into the formative years, both personal and professional, of Abraham Lincoln.

In addition to his earlier life, scholars have been busy reviewing and refining the basic research sources that have made further interpretation of Lincoln's life possible. Douglas Wilson and coeditor Rodney O. Davis have compiled the correspondence and reminiscences concerning William Herndon's research into the life of his friend and law partner, Abraham Lincoln. In addition, Michael Burlingame has edited the material of Noah Brooks, a personal secretary for Abraham Lincoln, which has allowed a glimpse into the personal and professional life of Lincoln during his presidential years. Couple these works with the exciting announcements from the Abraham Lincoln Association and the Lincoln Legal Papers concerning two projects that will be released in 1999, The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, on-line edition, and The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln: The Complete Documentary Edition, CD-ROM edition, and the world of Lincoln scholarship continues to have a very bright future.
