The year has brought many changes to the field of Lincoln scholarship. With the much-anticipated release of David Donald's biography Lincoln and the reissues of many of the classic works by the University of Nebraska Press, a resurgence in Lincolniana has occurred. There have been also been questions about finding the real Lincoln in photographs as well as about his assassination. New works have explored all aspects of Abraham Lincoln's life and his continuing impact on history.
New venues are also available for exhibiting facets of Lincoln's life and times. With the opening of the new Lincoln Museum at Lincoln National Life in Fort Wayne, Indiana, people from around the world can view works that helped shape his world. Another exhibit that will allow greater understanding is "The Last Best Hope of Earth: Abraham Lincoln and the Promise of America," which opened to the public in February 1996 at the Chicago Historical Society. The exhibit will be the largest showing of Lincolniana in the United States and promises to further fuel the reawakened interest in the sixteenth president. By showing the influences that shaped Lincoln's life, exhibits such as those in Chicago and Fort Wayne demonstrate the conditions that formed a man who many consider the greatest American.
It is important to remember that the image of Abraham Lincoln is in continual change. What these important books and exhibits do is help define who he was and what he means to the general public and a new generation of historians. By reissuing such classic works on Lincoln as Isaac Arnold's early biography, the University of Nebraska Press has reintroduced an earlier, much different view of Lincoln than is found in current works, such as Donald's Lincoln.
Changes, too, have come to the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association. Among them is the format of "Lincolniana," the annual section previously written by the former president of the association, Frank J. Williams. While he defined "Lincolniana" Page [End Page 61] broadly, the bibliography that follows, representative of the continued interest in Lincoln, represents a more structured approach to coincide with the Journal's research-oriented nature. The full citations will permit easier access to articles, books, reviews, and other scholarly works of interest to Lincoln scholars and enthusiasts. There may be some overlap of 1994 items in the list, but I have attempted to include items primarily from the publication year of 1995.
The Lincoln Legals Project
During 1995 completion of the inspection of court house records and remaining manuscript collections was realized for the Lincoln Legal Papers Project. More than a hundred thousand records pertaining to Lincoln's days as a lawyer have been uncovered over the past five years. The magnitude and scope of the project's searches is best illustrated by the discovery in June 1995 of fifty-nine Lincoln signatures and documents pertaining to his involvement as a pension attorney for veterans, their widows, and their children. These previously unknown records were found by project staff researcher John Lupton at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Another development for the project was the advancement of the editorial work for the completion of the project. The document scanning for the CD-ROM edition is on schedule, and the CD-ROM edition is scheduled to be issued in 1997.
There also continues to be new and exciting insight into Lincoln's legal career. Three papers from project staff members were presented at the 1995 Illinois History Symposium; Mark Steiner's article "The Lawyer as Peacemaker: Law and the Community in Abraham Lincoln's Slander Cases" appeared in the summer 1995 issue of the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association; and Dan Bannister is conducting work on Lincoln and his Illinois Supreme Court cases.
