ROY PRENTICE BASLER, retired from the Library of Congress, was chief of the Manuscript Division with Chair of American History, 1968-1974. Among his many books are The Lincoln Legend; Abraham Lincoln, His Speeches and Writings; Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, editor; Lincoln; and A Short History of the American Civil War.
JOHN HOPE FRANKLIN is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History, Duke University. He was the John Matthews Manly Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago from 1969-1982. He is author of a number of books, including The Emancipation Proclamation, From Slavery to Freedom: A History of Negro Americans and, his latest, George Washington Williams: A Biography. In 1984, he was the recipient of the Jefferson Medal, awarded by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
HERMAN HATTAWAY, professor of history at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, is the author of General Stephen D. Lee and coauthor of How the North Won and Why the South Lost. He has won the Jefferson Davis Award and the Bell I. Wiley Award.
FRANK J. WILLIAMS is an attorney in Providence, Rhode Island. He is a member of the board of directors and program chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Association, and he has served as president of the Lincoln Group of Boston since 1976. He chairs the Lincoln Advisory Committee of Brown University and authors a "Lincolniana" article for each February issue of Hobbies magazine.
