. Coolish—Reading, studying and walking PA.M. P.M. the landlord insisted upon my going with him across the river to witness a great horse-race, I concluded to go though more for the ride than to see the race—we had

a delightful drive of it and the race was an excellent one. It was a trotting match in sulkeys [sic sulkies] for $1000 a side. Flora Temple, the winner, was considered one of the fleetest horses in the country and had been the victor in nearly every contest in which she had been engaged—I am not an admirer of horse racing—it seems too much like cruelty, which it is, for many a noble animal has died from the effect of having their strength so overtasked. Walk after supper—study—to bed early
