Meeting, August 1967
~o xaus-t use every me thod, every individual and every organization now in exijtnnce, in a coordinated and sinr;le-minded total effort. but we 1Aust.also find som bold new way to do things, botter ways for old organizations to function, and original designs and new techniques to reach our objectivos. "e have one of the most responsible and responsive cormmunitius in the world, with somo of the best talent available anywhere and a record of public contribution second to none. Now we, this Committee, must decide how these wonderful resources can be used most effectively. ThIRD -- I believe we must each pledge personal devotion and continuity to the functioning of this Committee. I am sure it won't work if each meeting is attended by a different group of people, even if they represent the samo organizations. Some of you have long-standing commitments which prevent you from devoting full-time to the problems of Detroit. I am speaking now, of the chief executives of corporations with broad national or international scopO, like General 1otors or the UAW. Each of you has assured me of his personal comamitment to this effort, and I have no doubt of your sincority. If you who represent these far-flung organizations know you can't personally devote whatever time the job requires, then I ask you to designate ONE person from your top managoment who can--and I suggost we agree that one or the other, and no one else, will be available and fully authorized for whatever the dCutios of this Committee require. As for the rest of us, whose whole lives and commitments are in the Detroit area, we shouldn't need substitutes and there should be no question that we will dovote whatever time and attend whatever meetings the job takes. I think we should make this a firm rule of the functioning of this Commiittoe. I certainly do not intend to designate a substitute.
