aro not the correct categories, or aren't all that we will need, that
can certainly be corrected. So far, the responsos to the questionnaires,
and the lotters, indicate that we have a manageable and responsive sot
of categories and subject-headings, and a practical system for working
with them. I would like to make it clear that 7/7/ assignment of people
to theso task forces in no way involvos editing or pre-judging our
Conmittoo work. ~ather, it is a collacti-on' service to make our work
more effective. The task force exocutives will be as responsive to
your guidance and direction as they can bo. They have bon provided
at no cost to help rosearch and prepare our Committee's work. It would
be my suggestion that you meet and hear from these task force executives
at our next meeting.
Wo have only two clear restrictions on our activities, and I for one
as very happy for both of them. The first is that our responsibility
is to look forward; not backward. Others will sift and study what
happened in those awful days, and try to dotormine what happened and why.
Our only concern with that is how the corunity can eliminate the basic
causes for it, by imaginative and intelligent planning and working in
the future.
The second is /7 / that wo are not a fund-raising organization. We
should evaluate and document the need for funds, encourage contributions
and perhaps recommend priorities for their use and identify sources;
but we won't solicit or collect them as a K}EN OC aOIT &ctivity.
