Meeting, August 1967
~We should also reach some understanding about how each of us should conduct himself or herself in relation to the press on what is happening in the Committee and sub-committees. Your thoughtful comments on this can be very important to our future success. This is one point that can't be postponed. We have told the news people that there will be a news conference in this building when this meeting adjourns by 11:00 a.m. They would no doubt have been here anyway. What we do then will probably set the pattern for the future. Now, I have done a lot of talking, but have been able only to describe very generally the sizable amount of work that has already been done. If anyone has any question or comment on any general subject, I suggest you raise it now. We can consider each of the eight points I have just reviewed to be sure we have agreement in those areas, and in our method of working with the public press. Despite what we may have thought in the past, we learned the week of July 23 how little real listening has been taking place between some important groups here in Detroit. If this is true for our city, it is likely to be true as well for this Committee. Anyone reading the list of members of this Committee will recognize that distinctly different viewpoints and situations are represented here. If wise decisions and positive action is to come from our work together, each of us will need to listen sensitively to the others and Icarn from what we hear.
