- Notes
- The “Temple of Castor and Pollux,” sometimes linked to the older Temple to the Cthonic Deities, may have been originally dedicated to Demeter and Persephone, and was probably begun ca. 480-470 B.C.E. Much of the surviving structure may date from the last third of the 5th century B.C.E. This Temple may have been completed or rebuilt with a Hellenistic entablature during the 3rd century B.C.E., though surviving fragments may also belong to a separate structure. This illustration shows the results of a controversial partial “restoration,” carried out between 1836-1871, now believed to have combined portions of several different buildings to create an artificial, albeit picturesque, “ruin.”
