Habitat: Sandy prairie adjacent to wetland; soil moist in spring (but not with standing water), dry in summer. There are some old, shallow tire ruts in this area, which this species particularly favors. Associates: Liatris spicata (common), Andropogon virginicus (common), Aletris farinosa (common), Salix humilis, Spiraea tomentosa; Rhynochospora capitellata, Viola sagittata, Equisetum hyemale, Potentilla simplex, Rubus hispidus, Coreopsis tripteris, Popuus tremuloides (seedlings), Acer rubrum (seedling).
