sort of double veil, falling a little below the neck, thus hidden as by a long bavolet.
White jupons, with white stockings, are gradually returning into favor, except when colored bottines are worn; in the latter case the stockings should form a contrast as to color. Another excellent mode, when dresses are made to draw up, is to wear a jupon of the same material. The effect is somewhat less showy, certainly, but the object sought to be attained, the preservation of the robe, is thereby assured, without necessitating that appearance of coquetry which is disagreeable to many ladies.
THE ILLUSTRATIONS.
Fig. 1. Carriage Dress. — Robe of white foulard, ornamented throughout with violet silk trimmings, which contrast admirably with the dull white of the foulard. The small paletot is trimmed with the same design, but necessarily in a lesser proportion. White tulle chapeau empire, decorated with hedge-roses and rose-leaves, and provided behind with a large bow and two wide bands of white tulle.
Fig. 2. Evening Dress for a Young Lady. — Nankeen-colored silk robe, simply trimmed with deep-red silk cording round the skirt, on the shoulders, and in two rows on the sleeves in the guise of bracelets. The corsage is plain, buttoning in front, and fastened at the waist with a narrow red velvet band attached by a rosette. In the coiffure a few red velvet ornaments are introduced, and, with the frisure above the forehead and the bunch of curls behind, produce a very pleasing ensemble.
Fig. 3. Walking Dress. — The principal feature of this costume is the elegantly-cut, sleeveless, black silk mantle, edged throughout its entire outline with lace trimming. The upper part of the mantle is so designed as to show a portion of the corsage in front and behind. Worn over a violet dress (as in our engraving) the effect is very graceful. Violet crape chapeau fanchon, trimmed with white lace behind, and in front with one white and two violet flowers.
