Gender, Sexuality & Feminism (GSF) is an international open access, scholarly, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal publishing theoretically innovative and methodologically diverse research in the fields of gender studies, masculinities, sexualities and feminism. Our conception of both theory and method is broad and encompassing, and we welcome contributions from scholars around the world.
GSF is inspired by the need to put into dialogue academic thinking from the southern and northern hemispheres to ensure a dissemination of knowledge to a wider general audience.
GSF expressly solicits articles of outstanding merit previously published in other languages that have subsequently been translated into English, Spanish or French and will consider them for re-publication into English.
GSF selects at least one outstanding article by a scholar in the early stages of a career in academic research for each issue, thereby providing support for new voices and emerging scholarship.
Audience
Our intended audience is an academic one. As the journal is multi-disciplinary and intercultural, we envision attracting readers from a wide gamut of disciplines and from different parts of the world. GSF aims to provide academic literature which is accessible across disciplines, but also to a wider ‘non-academic’ audience interested and engaged with social justice, human rights, policy/advocacy, gender, sexualities, concepts of equality, social change, social mobilisation, international relations and development.
There are other journals which address those topics, but Gender, Sexuality & Feminism is the first journal that approaches the broad areas of gender, sexuality and feminism in an integrated fashion. It further addresses the issue of international collaboration and inclusion as existing gaps in the area of academic publishing by a) crossing language boundaries and creating a space for publishing in English, French and Spanish and b) providing an opportunity for innovative emerging scholars to engage in the academic dialogue with established researchers.
Structure of the Journal
- Articles. Five articles per issues. All articles will be preceded by an abstract (150-200 words), five keywords, and a contributor biography (150 words). Word length is 6,000-8,000 words, including notes and references.
- Book reviews. The review should be no more than 1000 words in length. This section will sometimes consist of review essays on a number of recent publications in a particular field or area of relevance to the journal (1000 words). Up to three reviews per issue.
Timeline and Schedule
Twice a year.
Publishing and Copyright Approach
All articles must not have been published or be under consideration elsewhere. We are unable to pay for permissions to publish pieces whose copyright is not held by the author. Contributors will be responsible for clearing all copyright permissions before submitting translations, illustrations or long quotes. The views expressed in papers are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the journal or its editors.
We are in agreement with Michigan Publishing (University of Michigan) in the sense that this is an Open Access journal and items hosted will be licensed under a Creative Commons License. GSF will have copyright of the published papers, but authors will also keep their rights to reprint or disseminate their papers through other channels.
Fiscal Information
The journal is an Open Access resource. GSF’s unique character supports the democratization of knowledge by providing a free and open access point to current academic and public debate. In its editorial goals it also supports the integration of southern and northern hemispheres in terms of interaction, debate and research while also ensuring a dissemination of knowledge to a wider general audience. Offering the journal on an open access basis ensures these aims. GSF has the financial support from the Daphne III Programme of the European Union.
Content Assessment
We are assured of the support of a diverse and strong network of international advisory members will who help us to disseminate the journal to practically all regions of the world. This journal does not reside in any other public form, either in print or online. The journal accepts papers in MS word format. They can include figures (e.g. charts, tables or graphs) and other images such as photographs. We request authors to send these figures and images inserted in the body of a word document and also as independent files in standard format such as jpeg files.
All articles will be peer-reviewed double-blind and will be submitted electronically to the journal ([email protected]). The editors ensure that all submissions are refereed anonymously by two readers in the relevant field. In the event of widely divergent opinion during this process a third referee will be asked to comment, and the decision to publish taken on that recommendation. We expect that the editorial process will take up to four months. We will allow up to four weeks for contributors to send in revised manuscripts with corrections. There is a detailed GSF style-guide available in the Journal’s website.
