According to the 1930 Census, Cincinnati has a Negro population of 47,818. It has 112 churches, or a church for each 427 Negroes. Counting only adults, those 13 years old and over, Cincinnati has an adult Negro population of 37,594, or a church for each 336 adults. But considering only the 22,341 who have their names on church rolls, there is a church in Cincinnati for each 199 adult members. If the Cincinnati churches spent in 1930 sums that equaled $12.27 for each adult enrolled member, the average church had for expenditures $2,441.73. Of the 51 Cincinnati churches studied, 30, or approximately three-fifths, raised less than $3,000 in 1930. The situation in the other northern cities is similar, as Table XIV shows.
