Fellowship and Community Activities 163 whether of the North or the South, it may be concluded that white opinion is fairly well generalized. However, there is some distinction, as the investigators know from their own experiences, between the expression of these attitudes in the North and in the South. The South suffers no inhibitions toward attempting to put the Negro where he belongs. In the North, although the feeling of the South is apparently shared, the Negro does not usually anticipate an overt expression of this attitude. In further response to this question, some white ministers took the opportunity to extend their remarks. Excerpts from these remarks appear below without reference to geographical locality. The responses, like those already quoted, serve to illuminate these generalized attitudes. THE MIXED FEELINGS OF THE WHITE MINISTRY The question is-What would you recommend as a means of improving the interracial aspects of the ministry and the church? The replies are: Contact with cultured Negroes; sense of superiority visibly diminishes before the Negro with poise, brains and unprejudiced spirit. He makes whites of less ability feel humble, and demands respect because of his qualities. Whites need a new (true) conception of the brotherhood of man. White man feels his superiority and makes this work complex. Both must cultivate sympathetic attitude toward each other's problems and position. This is suggested from very practical and intimate knowledge. Delegations from clubs, and pulpit-exchange would be helpful; also special projects of help such as financing daily vacation Bible schools.
