Alang-alangan: half-heartedness. Benchipun
alang-alangan rupa-nya: he seemed halfhearted about his hatreds; Ht. Koris.
Kalau kaseh alang-alangan
Biyar ta'-usah sa-kali-kali:
if you are to be half-hearted in love, you had
better not be in love at all.
Bingong alang: thunderstruck; confused.
Kiris a.: a short straight dagger.
III. A common Malay familiar appellation
(timang-timangan) applied usually to the third
child in a family.
Probably derived from II.
IV. Alang-alang. Jav. Lalang, grass;
v. lalang.
V. (Riau, Johor) si-alang and (Kedah) to'alang: the names given to large trees where
the wild bees build their nests; v. siyalang and
tuwalang.
J\ aling. I. To narrowly scan anything held
in the hand; cf. tatap.
II. Ulang-aling: backwards and forwards;
to and fro. Maka Tun Omar pun pergi-lah
dengan sa-buwah p~rahu-nya ulang-aling: Tun
Omar sailed backwards and forwards with his
one ship: Sej. Mal., 1I5.
Also pronounced olang; cf. pulang and paling.
III. Jav. To shield, to cover.
along. Alongan: a pool, a mere, a tank.
Lalu berangkat ber-siram ka-alongan: then he
went and bathed in the tank: Ht. Sh.
\ Slang. A generic name for a number of birds
of prey; see s. v. lang.
\ e1ong. A curve, an arc. Pngelotng: a hoop;
cf. lok, telok, gelong, etc.
ili\ alif. The name of the first letter of the alphabet. Di-tukar-nya alif itu dengan fatlhah: he
substituted the letter alif for the vowel point
fathah; Ht. Abd., I45. Alif-bd-td: the ABC;
the alphabet.
iJ\ alap. I. Slow, quiet, sedate, unassuming in
manner. Lemnah lemIbut alap santun: sweet
and quiet, modest and unassuming in manner; Ht. Koris.

II. Alap-alap: (Kedah) a green bird (species
unidentified).
III. Mengalap: to pick fruit by cutting the
stalks with a knife fastened at the end of a
long pole. i

alpa. [Skr. alpa: little, mean.] Carelessness, negligence, treating as of little account.
Jangan-lah alpa kapada barang swatu: do not
be negligent in any respect; do not neglect
anything: Ht. Sg. Samb.
Also lepa.
alperes. [Port. alferes.] A petty officer;
a constable. A. batu and a. jawa: names of
fish.

j\ alek. Olak-alek: backwards and forwards,
one way and the other. Chakap olak-alek:
inconsistent talk; self-contradictory stories.

1\ Blok. The curves or windings in the blades of
some varieties of the kEris; also lok, q. v. Cf.
elong, telok, gelong, etc.

aleku. A pimp; a "pinaig mu-da"; see Ht.

j'l\ alilintar. A thunderbolt; also halilintar
and hlalintar, q. v.
4\ Allah. (Arab.: from 3\, God; with the article
\prefixed: "the one true God.") The name
of God; Allah. Bi'snti'llahi: in the name of
Allah. Delngan takdbr Allah: by the decree of
God.
\ alim. The name of a medicinal drug.
\ almari. Port. A wardrobe; a cupboard;
Ht. Abd., 125, 283.,-i\ al&mas. [Arab. almids.] Diamond; Ht. Gul.
Bak., 147.
alan. Alan-alan: a jester; a buffoon; a
clown.
~\ alin. Medicinal rubbing; rubbing the body
with a round stone, egg, or ball of rice over
the affected part. The theoretical object of
this medicinal massage in many cases is to
extract a foreign body (which may be doing
the injury) by means of the attraction of the
ball of egg or rice, and in some cases a hair or
other small object is afterwards picked out of
the ball of rice and shown to the patient as
proof positive of the success of the treatment.
