346 CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS. Membrane 12-cont. 1256. Allocate to John de Vernun, sheriff of Wilts, in the issues of the last eyre of Gilbert de Preston and his fellows, justices, 341. 6s. 8d. delivered in the wardrobe to Artald etc. at Clarendon on the Sunday after St. Nicholas. To the sheriff of Cambridge. Contrabreve to let the king's yeoman John de Bruay have 61. 11s. 3d. out of the issues of the county, being arrears of his wages while with the king on his service in Gascony, as reckoned by Ralph Loff, clerk of the marshalsea. To the sheriff of Somerset. Contrabreve to let Reynold de Drumar' have a tun of wine of the king's gift against Christmas. To the sheriff of Wilts. Contrabreve to amend the king's chamber at Clarindon where absolutely necessary, to renew the painting of the panels (tabularum) in the king's chapel and to enclose the penthouse between the king's wardrobe and the chamber of Alexander with boards; to wainscot the chamber near the park above the bed, to make a small oratory therein, and to mend the windows; and to amend all the other defects in the king's court of Clarindon; the cost to be credited by view and testimony of lawful men. To the sheriff of Wilts. Contrabreve to feed the friars preachers of Wilton, the friars minors of Salisbury, and 100 poor persons, so that each poor person shall have ld., for the soul of Robert de Mares, deceased at Clarendon. As the king has asked the dean and canons of Salisbury, being present, to bury the corpse in their cathedral, the sheriff is to find oblations and other things needful for the burial, and to let the keepers of the works of the church have 5 marks of the king's gift to continue those works. Allocate to Stephen Fromund, bailiff of Merleberg, in the farm Winchester. of the manor, 208. 10id. spent in taking bream in the king's stew of Merleberg and putting them in paste, and sending 18 to the king at Clarendon on his arrival there before Christmas last, 60 to the king at Winchester against that feast, and 60 to the king at Wodestok against the Assumption last, as accounted and testified by William de Grey the king's steward. Dec. 18. Allocate to John son of Bernard, in the next terms of his debts Guildford. at the Exchequer, 15 marks paid for a goshawk for the king.
