40 HENRY III. 307 1256. MEMBRANE 6. June 27. To the sheriff of Salop and Stafford. Contrabreve, on his Winchester. loyalty to the king and as he loves himself and all that he has, to go in person to Bristol and there buy 20 tuns of good wine, paying for them out of the issues of the counties or some other source, and carry 8 tuns to Shrewsbury, 4 to Wenlok, 4 to Bruges, and 4 to Bobinton, and place them safely in the cellars there against the king's arrival, as he proposes to come shortly to those parts, God willing; the cost to be credited by view. Like writ to the sheriff of Hereford to buy 8 tuns and carry 2 to Ledebur' and 6 to Hereford as above. Like writ to the sheriff of Worcester to buy 18 tuns, and carry 10 to Worcester, 4 to Feckenham, 2 to Evesham, and 10 to Kedeminstr' as above. Like writ to the sheriff of Gloucester to buy 18 tuns, and carry 2 to Berkele, 12 to Gloucester, 2 to Teokebur', and 2 to Otinton, the manor of the elect of York, as above. June 29. Allocate to James le Sauvage, sheriff of Hants, in the issues of Winchester. the eyre of Gilbert de Preston and his fellows, justices last itinerant in the county for common pleas, 1441. spent in purchase of 72 tuns of wine from divers merchants at Suhampton against Whitsuntide last. Liberate without delay to John de Castello, knight, 50 marks for Michaelmas term in the 40th year of his yearly fee of 50 marks (see Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1247-1258, p. 413). Liberate without any hindrance or delay to William de Trublevill, going on the king's errand in the utmost haste to the parts of France, 20 marks for his expenses. To the sheriff of Hants. Contrabreve to wainscot the king's pantry and cellar in his castle of Winchester, to remove the earth from the ditch under the king's tower behind the hall, to examine (rimari) and mend the walls where necessary, to make the postern gate of new timber, to amend in like manner a building over (ultra) the king's oven and the painting in the king's and queen's chambers, to wainscot the queen's wardrobe, to renew in like manner the painting in the chapel by the king's bed, to remove the earth from the road between the castle gate and the barbican, to mend the common privy chamber, which threatens to fall down, to make a stairway from the door out of Rosamond's chamber to the chapel by the king's bed, to crenellate well the buttress (columpnam boteraz) from the bottom of the tower ditch
