40 HENRY III. 271 1256. Membrane 14-cont. Feb. 15. To the sheriffs of London. Contrabreve to carry 2 tuns of wine Woodstock. with all speed to St. Albans, 1 to Dynesle, and 2 to Royston, to place in the king's cellars there against his arrival, which will be shortly, out of 5 to be delivered by John de Gisorciis the king's chamberlain of London. Feb. 19. Liberate to Master William de Tholosa, carpenter, 71. 2s. 6d. Woodstock. arrears of his wages (vadiorum) while with two of his men on the king's service in Gascony down to Thursday, the feast of St. Agatha, and 114s. 2d. arrears of his stipend (stipendiorum) on the like service down to the Thursday after St. Peter's Chains, all reckoned by Richard le Rus (Ruffum), king's clerk, receiving from William the king's letters patent therefor. Jan. 2. Liberate to Roger de Thurk[elby] 50 marks for Easter term in Guildford. the 39th year of the yearly fee of 100 marks granted to him to maintain himself in the king's service. Note that higher up in this roll is another liberate which he had for his fee for Michaelmas term in that year. Feb. 18. To Peter son of Geoffrey and Andrew Arketel, formerly bailiffs Woodstock. of Staunford. Contrabreve, seeing that it is established by inspection of the charter of William de Humet, formerly true lord of their town, and of the confirmation thereof by King John (Rotuli Chartarum, 202), that William in his lawful power gave 10 marks of silver yearly out of the issues of the town to the church of Citeaux, which the king has learnt for certain that he had full power to do, and that since the said gift the abbot of Citeaux has been in full seisin of that sum down to last year, when the king held the town in his own hand, to pay to the abbot or his proctor without delay 10 marks arrears for that year out of the arrears they owe the king. To Godfrey de Lyston. Contrabreve to pay 6d. each daily to Herlewin Norman, William Blampomer, Engelard de Synagun, and Richard de Aubervyle, serjeants-at-arms dwelling in garrison at the castle of Windesores, from Michaelmas last to Easter next, as the king has fixed their stipend at that sum, diminishing and modifying his former sumptuous expenses on keeping and garrisoning his castles, in view of the immense and burdensome debts which he owes in divers ways. To the same. Contrabreve to repair the breach of the castle of Windesores which has lately fallen in, by the advice of Master John the mason, the cost to be credited by view. Feb. 19. To the sheriff of York. Contrabreve, so long as he is sheriff, to Woodstock. spend 100 marks yearly by view and testimony of lawful men on the works of York castle till they are finished.
