CALENDAR OF LIBERATE ROLLS.

1255. MEMBRANE 16.
Liberate to Ernald Willelmi, burgess of Sault-St.-Navailles
(Saltu), 4 marks for his expenses homewards, as the king cannot
at present pay his debt to him and other burgesses of Sault.
To the sheriffs of London. Contrabreve to carry to Windesores
without delay to place in the king's cellars there 20 tuns of wine
to be taken for the queen and delivered to them by John de
Gisorciis the king's chamberlain of London.
Dec. 8. To the same. Contrabreve, so long as they are sheriffs and the
Windsor. king's elephant is in London, to find what is reasonably necessary
for it and its keeper.
To John de Sumercote, keeper of the exchange. Contrabreve
to take 60 marks out of the issues of the exchange for his expenses
in going on the king's errand to the court of Rome for the business
enjoined on him.
Dec. 10. Liberate to William de Sancta Ermina 40 marks in hand for
Reading. Easter term in the 40th year of his yearly fee of 40 marks, to pay
certain debts of his in London as he has asked.
To the sheriff of Oxford and Berks. Contrabreve to pay 15
marks of the king's gift to the canons of Caveresham for the
fabric of their church.
Dec. 17. To Stephen Fromund, bailiff of Lutegarsale. Contrabreve
Ludgershall. to make a limekiln (rogum) and to repair and amend where
absolutely necessary the walls and battlements and the building
over the gate of the king's castle of Lutegarsale, the cost to be
credited by view.
Dec. 17. To the bailiffs of Winchester. Contrabreve to let the king's
Clarendon. almoner Simon the chaplain have 50 pairs of shoes for the poor
against Christmas, at Winchester by the Thursday before Christmas, one-half to be worth 5d. the pair and the other half worth 4-id.
Dec. 22. Allocate to John de Vernun, sheriff of Wilts, in the issues of the
Clarendon. county, 5s. 10d. spent in repair of a chamber at Clarendon.
To the bailiffs of Winchester. Contrabreve to let Andrew
Poynaunt, keeper of the king's chandlery, have 500 pounds of
wax against Christmas by the coming day of St. Thomas at latest.
To the bailiffs of Suthampton. Contrabreve to buy 500 pounds
of wax against Christmas and send them without delay to the
king at Winchester so that he may have it in the wardrobe on
the coming Thursday before Christmas.
