-52 - " as the bulk of the people was composed of Malays and Chinese " whose feelings and interests were closely connected with Kedah. " Many of the Europeans, from motives of humanity, were doubt"less also in favour of Kidah. but none of these cases can be " deemed as any evidence or proof of the political question in " either way, as to the Rija's claims or rights. " Penang, 9th December, 1849. J. Low. " We shall not enter into any controversy with our esteemed " contributor. In saying that public opinion in Penang has " always been strongly in favour of the rights and claims of the " Malay Kings of Kidah, we meant the opinion of the great " majority of the Europeans of Penang not connected with Govern" ment. Much has been said and written on both sides of the " question, and we saw with some apprehension the revival of the " discussion in the pages of this Journal. We say nothing as to " the relative value of Colonel Low's opinion and that of Mr. " ANDERSON and the large number of European residents, past and " present, who, like ourselves, agree in Mr. ANDERSON's views. " Whether or not the Local Government of 1824 concurred in " these views, may he gathered from the following extracts from " the report of the trial o f Tunku MAHIIOMED 8AAD in the Court of " Judicature at PeImagi igi 1840. " From the eifence o f the floa'ble J. W'. SALDoN, Esq., Rei" dent Councillor (t Pniiaiq. " I have read Mr. ANDERSoN's work, but have not compared it " with the Government records, but I believe they are cited " correctly. " Do you know the book to have been printed under the autho" rity of Government? " I know that 100 copies were printed by order of Government " and sent to the Court of Directors.
