- 78 - BERTRAND, Mile CHARLOTTE EMILIE STEPHANIE (Erench). Contemporary Sculptor, born in Paris; pupil of Fremiet, Valton, and Peter. At the Paris Salon of 1907 she exhibited Plaquettes in silver representing Horses, Dogs, Bull, etc. BERY, EDOUARD JEAN BAPTISTE SEPTIME (B. D. M., vol. I, I904, p. 178). By this artist is also: 886. Portrait of M. Cadot, shell cameo. BESCHER, AUGUSTE (B. D. M., vol. I, I904, p. I79). Florange calls him a Publisher ofmedals, and his name occurs as A. BESCHER EDITEUR on a Mining jeton of Vicoigne and Nceux (arr. of Bethune), struck at the Paris Mint in 1866. He was the successor of Honore de Longueil, and his business still exists, Rue du Pontde-Lodi, 5, Paris. He was born IS. March I84I. Bescher Senior died in Paris, and hisson, who succeeded him, died about 90o5. By him is also a medal of the Ecole d'accouchement de la HauteVienne, and another on Vaccination, Dept de l'Eure (signed: BESCHER). BIBLIOGRAPHY.- J. Florange, Essai sur les jetons et medailles de mines, I904. BESOLT (BESELT,) ALBRECHT (B. D. M., vol. I, 1904, p. I79). Seal-engraver at Nuremberg; son of Matthaus Ludw. B.; died in early years in August I769. He is said to have worked also as a Medallist. BESOLT (BESELT), JOHANN CHRISTOPH (Germ.). Seal and Coinengraver at Nuremberg; he is mentioned between I740-I750 among the Masters in his profession. Vide Zahn, Jahrbiicher fiir Kznslwuissenschaft, I, 250. BESOLT (BESELT), MATTHAUS (or MATTHIAS) LUDWIG (Germ.). Belt-maker, and Engraver of seals and armorial bearings at Nuremberg, I740-I770. BESSAIGNET, ISIDORE (B. D. M., vol. I, I904, p. I8o). Son-inlaw of the Engraver Leveque and brother-in-law of Bouvet, Mintengraver to Napoleon iII. He was born at Toulouse, 20. March 18I I and died in Paris, 14. January 1885. He published various medals, and also Mining jetons of Aniche, etc. His signature occurs also on a medal: Verein Deutscher Aertzte, Paris. BESSON, CLAUDE (French.). Mint-master at Lyons, 15oo —509; distinctive mark, annulet between the fleur-de-lys and LVDOVICVS. BEST, W. R. (Brit.). Medallist; exhibited at the Royal Academy in I827 an Impression from an intaglio.
