changed to read HE SERVED A PROSPEROUS NATION etc., etc. DIED

HANDMANN, JOHANN JAKOB I.(B. D.M., Vol. II, p. 415). Mintengraver, Medallist, and Seal-engraver, died in I786, and was
buried on 13. June of that year. In I748 he had been elected u
member of the Gross Rath: By him are a large number of coins
and medals, which show chiefly a view of Basle from the Rhinethe Basilea, and other allegorical figures. Cf. Brun, Schweieer. Kiinst,
ler-Lexikon.
The following coins are signed H., or IH., IHM, or also HM
Ducat 1743 (Ewig 104 and o5); DoubleThaler of 1740 (E. p. ii6
a), I74I (E. 132) and 1762 (E. p. ii6 b); Thaler of I741, I756
(2 var.), 1765 (2 var.) and 1785 (E. 202, 203, 204, 205 and 206,
207); Half Thaler of 174I (4 var.), I757 (2 var.), 1765 (2 var.),
I785, 1786 (E. 286 to 289, 290 and 291, 292 and 293, 296, 297);
Third-Thaler I766 (E. 359 to 361); Quarter Thaler I740 (E. 363
and 364), most of which coins including strikes in gold are found
in the Historical Museum of Basle. The Presentation medals of
1769 with a cube on PgL (E. 757 to 760), are signed HANDM., as
also those of I770 with Mercury and Minerva on 1gL (E, 76I and

HANDMANN, JOHANN JAKOB II (B.D.M., Vol. II, p. 416). Date
of birth unknown, died at Basle and buried on 14. February I793.
The. Thalers of Basle dated I793 (Ewig 208 to 2IO) bear his
initials, whilst the undated Half and Quarter Ducats (E. I4 and
118) cannot be assigned with certainty to the one or the other
Handmann, as the dies of both Engravers of the I780 period are
similarly signed.
Some Reward Medals of I79I and I792 for the Swiss troops
covering the frontier during the Franco-Prussian war are signed
J.J.H.II. Cf. M.A. Ruegg, op. cit., p. 17.
The Thaler of I798, signed H, of the Helvetic Republic, is not
by Handmann.
