312 S YATTJIETi CAL PERIOD. [Par. 573. 573 VERBS. THE VERB "BE." It is curious to note the multiplicity of forms, as compared with the barrenness of Tenses, in the old Verb "1be." Our modern Verb contains remnants of three distinct roots - I. AS (IS). II. BE. III. (WAS). INDICATIVE MOOD. Present Tense. Singular Number. Plural Number. I. Rout ("I as ")~ 11. Root ("be")! I. Root ' as!')'IL. Root (" be") 1. eo-m, ea-rnl beo-m, beo ar-on, sind 2 beo-th 2. ear-t bi-st ar-on, sind beo-th 3. is bi-th ar-on, sind beo-th Past Tense. Singular Number. Plural Kurnfer. 111. Root "Iwas." III. Root "was." 1. waes wae~r-on 2. waer-e wae~r-on 3. waes waer-on Our "1a-rn" is a contraction from "1ar-rn," or " as-rn," where the "as" is the same root as in tbe Greek ' elni " or "1esmi,"1 I "1am." 'Ihe terminations -mn, -t, -s, are Personal Inflections; so that the Relations between the Original Root " as " and the Modern Verb, are represen~ted in the followitig column: - ROOT.
