UfisC,3 fis eowic,3 eow hi She is an altered form of the Old Feminine Definite Adjective, Seo, or sio. 2 Hence we see the origin of the Possessive Adjectives "1mine (my)," "thine (thiy)," "1her," "6our," &c. Also we see the Dative origin of " hi-in," "1he-r." Note also that he, heo, hit Was really a Demonstrative Adjective. Cf. the Latin is, ea, id. He means "that man "; heo mneamis "that woman." 3Chiefly Northumbrian forms. The substitution of they (= thai, th&) for hi is (ins to.Northumbrian influence. 4 In the Elizabethan dramatists, and even in Pope, we often find 'em printed with ai Apostrophe, as though it were a contraction for them. But thuis is not so: it represents the Old English hemz. See Dr. Morris's Accidence, Par. 160. 5 Thiou was discarded as being discourteous, and was replaced by you. See Shakspearian Grammar, Pars. 231-35.
