260 ADVERBIAL CLAUSES. [Par. 455,456. (Par. 398), but also as a Noun and Relative Adverb together: (1) " He lives about ten miles from here." "From where?" (2) "He lives ten miles from where I am living," i.e. "from the place in which or where I am living." ADVERBIAL CLAUSES. 455 " That." Instead of " when " used Relatively, sometimes the Relative Pronoun " that" is used (Par. 444): — (1) " He never (at no time) sees me that (at which time) he does not mock me." Compare, in Early English(2) " Scarcely was this speech finished that (i.e. when) they saw Hengist approach." 1 456 "But" being used after negatives to intensify an affirmative, e.g. " This is nothing but the truth," came to be irregularly used, in Shakspeare's time, after Negative Comparatives, e.g. "This is no more but the truth." This seems to be a (II.) confusion between " nothing but" and " no more than." Hence (in colloquial English), after "not," "no sooner," "scarcely," and other words implying a I Layamon, ii. 262.
