Par. 387, 388.1 "1TO " OMiTTE D.25 221 5 (2) " You would have (find) it better (to) be quiet." (3) " I had rather (to) be a doorkeeper," i.e. " I sooner ('roatle' (Adj.) meant I early,' soon ' would have," i.e. " I prefer (to) be a doorkeeper." "To " is also omitted after "1have" in(4) " I must have you (to) attend." (5) " You will have your father (to) blame you." It is impossiblie to tell whether " Please help me," is for (1) "1May it please you to help roe," or for (2) ', Hellp mne, please," which. is an abbreviation of'I Help) me, if you please, or, so lilease you." Do," 0. E. dton, originalIly meanit ''cause,'' eq. '' (lo ine drenche,'' cause (somec one) to (dreiich ne.'' About the thirteenth cenitury it began to be use(l for simpl~e emphasis, and( in thle tifteentli century, was regularly isel thuis. In ' How (10 you do," the first (lo is the ordinary one, 0. E. don, the second is 0. E. ditgan "1to be good, or- worth." (.Monars). 387 lThe omission of "1to " after such Verbs as let, bid, make, dare, see, hear, feel, may be explained (1) by the desire of brevity manifesting itself, specially in the nse -of words so common as these are; and (2) by the fact that old constructions (i.e. the Old Infinitive without "1to ") are to be looked for in. common words. (See Par. 95, 96.) 388 But this explanation does not explain the omission of " to" after such uncommon words as " view," behold," mark," watch," observe," "1 perceive," &c. The explanation here is perhaps as follows: when the "1to " form of tile Infinitive came in, the construction would become(7) " I observed him to come." 15
