If the termination of a word is a consonant preceded by a vowel (e.g. "-it"), then, on receiving an affix beginning with a vowel (e.g. "-ing "), the final consonant in the word is doubled (e.g. "-itting"), provided that the word is a monosyllable (e.g. " sit"), or a polysyllable accented on the last syllable (e.g. "remit"). This is in order to preserve the sound. If the consonant were not doubled, "hop-ping" would be confused with " hop-ing ": - (1) Hop, hop-ping; thin, thin-ner; fat, fat-test. ACCENT ON THE LAST.
