161 161 ~ANAL YS,-;IS [a.25 [Par. 255 - Sentence of the third Degree, and must therefore be underlined a third time. 4. 'The Principal Verb in the third Sub-ordinate Sentence is "1would come." Read on to the next Sub-ordinate Conjunction "1before." The following words,"1 he left town," make up a Sub-ordinate Sentence of the fourth Degree, and must therefore be underlined a fourth time.' 255 Relative Clauses. A Relative Clause sometimes introduces (1) an implied Co-ordinate, sometimes (2) an implied Subordinate Sentence. The Sub-ordinate Sentence may form part, sometimes of (2) an Adverbial, sometimes (3) of an Adjectival Clause. (1) "I heard it from the Landlord, who heard it from the policeman," i.e. " (and) he," &c.; a Coordinate Sentence, " who " being, put for "and (2) " I ought not to have been beaten by John, who has never beaten me before," i.e. " (since) lie has," &c.; Sith-ordinate Sentence. (Adverb.) (3) " I heard it from the boy that cleans the boots," Sub-ordinate Sentence. (Adjective.) 2 INote that, If the meaning ha-d been,1 "Though I biad promised *..town, yet lie comiplaine(1,' tlieii the words. ' though.. town 1 Wouild have ina~le up an Adverb of Circumstance, niodlifying '' cornpdaiiedl.' Ini that case, - (though) I had proniised " would have been in tlie first Degree (niot tie second) of Sub-ordlina-tion. 2 '1 Tlint, (boy) cleans the b~oots ' may perhtaps be called a, Subordinate Sentence in trodnceed by the ConjUn1ctiVe farce of the Relative "1that."
