252 Contracted Sentences. When two Sentences are connected by (1) the Co-ordinate Conjunctions "and" and
"but;" (2) by Comparative Conjunctions, e.g. "as,"
" tlln;" the Verb in the second Sentence is often omitted
and sometimes the omission extends to other words: -
(1) "I saw John yesterday and (I saw) Thomas the day before."
(2) "He is taller than I (am tall)." See " than," Index.
(3) "I have as many apples as you (have apples)."
In all such cases the full Sentences should be expressed
if the whole Sentence is to be analyzed. See Par. 209.
The Sentences introduced by "than" and "as" (in this
sense) are Sub-ordinate; for " than " and " as " (in this sense)
cannot stand at the head of a Sentence placed by itself.
253 Degrees of Sub-ordination (Synthesis).
Note that a Complex Sentence may contain (1) a
Principal Sentence; (2) a Sub-ordinate Sentence
depending on the Verb 1 in the Principal Sentence;
(3) a second Sub-ordinate Sentence depending on
the Verb in the first Sub-ordinate; (4) a third Subordinate depending on the Verb in the second Subordinate; and so on.
1 Not always on the Verb. The implied Sentence in a Relative
Phrase may qualify a Noun.
