Adverbial Phrases or Clauses, the Clauses being Sub-ordinate Sentences preceded by Conjunctions, thug: - "After the capture of this important city (Adverb 1 of Cause or Tlme), this great general (S'ubject) - tle Hannibal of his day (Adjective qualcifying Sublject) -unsurpassed for military intuition and promptness of action (Adjective quallnyig Subject), incurring the suspicion of having betrayed the town (i.e. ' since he incurred,' tlerefore Adverb of Cause) was (part of Principal TVerb) so completely (Adverb) distrusted (rest of Pricipal Verb) even by his own solliers (Adverb of Agency) who had( won so many battles under him (i.e. 'tlough they had won,' therefore Adverb 2) that lie was deprived of his command, and would have been executed, but for the influence of his wife (Adverb of Result)." EXERCISE. 251 Expand the following Simple Sentences into Complex Sentences by introducing Adverbial Phrases to describe cause, purpose, material, agency, instruments, manner, place, time, circumstances, i.e., condition, obstacle, cc.:1. The house was built. 2. Napoleon died at St. Helena. 3. Clarles I. was executed. 4. James II. was deposed. 1 For brevity, the terms Adverb, Adjective, &c., are used for Adverbial Phrase, Adjectival Phrase, &c. 2 If it had beeni "The soldiers that liad won," the Relative Clause "that blitd won," &e., wonli lhave described the solliers; thereftore it woulll have been an Adjective Clause. But "who" also sometimes introduces an Adjective Clause.
