Sentences.
245 1.- A Simple Sentence. - A Sentence that has
only one Subject and only one Stating, Questioning,
or Commanding Verb is a Simple Sentence:"John struck Thomas."
Note that " John came, but soon departed," is not
iisimple," because (though it has only one
Subject) it has two stating Verbs; again, " John
came that Robert might take a holiday," is not
simple," because, though there is only one
stating Verb,' yet there are two Subjects.
246 2. A Co-ordinate Sentence. - Whien several
Simple Sentences are connected by "4 and," "1 beat,"
"so, "then," $76 7 c., 2 so that each Sentence is, as it
were, independent, and of the samne rank as the rest,
each is called a Co-ordinate Sentence:
"John struck Thomas, so, and, buit, &c., Thomas
struck John again."
The mark of a Co-ordinate Sentence is that it
can generally stand as a sentence by itself, preceded
by its Conjunction, e.g.: -
-l~e made all possible haste. For he was afraid of
being late."
ITn "Robert mnight take," "1might take " may be (Par. 1741 a
statiifg Verb: but, when preceded by "Ithat," the Verb ceases to
state.
