154 ANA LYS IS [Par. 240. Such Phrases as those in (3), are sometimes, however, called, for shortness, Noun-Sentences, because they include Sentences. But it must be always borne in mind that they are not really Sentences, though they become Sentences if the Conjunction is removed. 24.0 Phrases and Clauses. A Phrase or Clause may express: 1. A Noun. 2. An Adjective. 3. An Adverb. 1. Noun Phrases 1 are exemplified by the italicized words in the following Sentences:1. To be anxious is useless. 2. That he is in error is certain. 3. Wthy you act thus I cannot understand. 4. I like a rascal to be punished. 5. What is done cannot be undone. 6. Whether he meant what he said, it is hard to determine. 7. Walking to school is being injuriously superseded by trains and omnibuses. EXERCISE. The pupil should construct other sentences on the model of each sentence above, having NounPhrases 1 for Subjects and for Objects. For example, beginning with (1), the pupil should make Noun 1 For brevity, the word " Phrase " is used to include " Clause."
