How to parse. ...

Par. 201, 202.] RELA TI VE WORDS.13 101) 00 Relative Pronouns and Adverbs. 201 1. " That " is often omitted as the Object, and sometimes (rarely except in Poetry) as the Subject: - (1) " 'Twas you (that) I saw." (2) )"'Twas you (that) said so, not I." The regular construction inserts "that." The cause of irregularity is (J.)' "the desire of lbrevity," and (II.) 1 confusion " with the straighltf orward construction "You said so." 202 2. "But" seems put for "that... not " or "4who...not," e.g. in(1) "There is no ooe here but hates you," i.e. " that does not hate you." The radical meaning of "1but " is "1be-out " or "9 with-out;;" hence "1 except." And therefore, tile regular construction is(2) )"T here is no man here but or except (hie) hate you.) Compare Julius Uesar, V. a, 35 - (3) "1I found no man bit he was true to me." Brev~ity steps in And omits " he." Also "but is confused with a Rlelative Pronoun, just as "1as " is. (See next Paragraph). For other uses of " but,1' see Index. 1 These Noimbers refer to the Laws of Irregularity roentioaed in Paragraph 198.
