111 CONDITIONATL.MOOD. [Par. i68, x69. I68 Conditional Mood. Antecedent. Consequent. sees 1 1 will know were to see - (If he) l'should see (me), (he) would know me Ih sawou had seen wouldhaveknown I69 The Conditional Mood of Auxiliary Verbs. The Auxiliary Verbs have only the Indicative form of the Subjunctive; they do not use the " shall-form." For example, we do not say, " If I should can (be able to) come, I should will (wish to) do so," but "If I could come, I would do so." Remembering that" could,"" might," and " would" are the Past Tenses of "can," "may," and "will," and also bearing in mind the meanings of " can," "will," &c., viz. " to be able," " to be willing," we shall be able to express their Indicative Subjunctive forms in the ordinary Subjunctive forms, as follows: 1 The form "if he see " is now nearly extinct in good modern English. But a remnant of it renmais in " if it were," which is the only correct mo(lern form for the Past Conditional. " If I was you " is ungranmmatical, though found (as well as "you was") il the eighteenth century. " If it be," " though it be," are also still used, though falling into disuse. " Were " generally implies a Condition not fulfilled For an explanation of the curious anomalies of this Scheme, see Appendix I., Par. 231.
