Par. I62.] "IT" AS ANTECEDENT. 111 162 It would appear also to apply to(9) " It was at you that I laughed." (10) " It was from you that I received this insult." These sentences would appear to be for " It that I laughed at was you," It that I received this insult from was you." It has been suggested that " it" is here the " Preparatory it," and "that" a Conjunction, the meaning being " The fact that I received this insult was owing to, or, from you." But this does not seem to hold good for (9) " The fact that I laughed was at you." Of course however "it" is the Preparatory "it," and "that" is a Conjunction in: (11) " It was in the time of Julius Caesar that the Romans first invaded Britain."
