For example, he" e " ight be made the Complete Subject of "is known," "was heard," "was asked"; although in a very different sense from that of the following examples, in which "he" is Partial Subject: - (1) " le is known to be honest." -(2) "He was heard to say, seen to do," &c. (3) "lHe was asked to do, ordered to come," &c. In all these cases it is better to parse the Infinitive as Complementary; but it may be parsed, though not so well, Adverbially, e.g. "he is known as regards being honest," "he was heard in the act of saying," &c. io8 The Infinitive after Adjectives. I. As an Adjective can be modified by an Adverb, so can it by an Adverbial Infinitive:(1) "Pleasant to see," i.e., "in seeing," or, "for the purpose of seeing." (2) " This is hard to bear," i.e., " in," or "for bearing." (3) "I am content to be poor," i.e., "w ith being poor." (4) "iHe is quick to detect imposition," i.e., "at detecting." (5) " This apple is fit to eat," i.e., "for the purpose of eating."
