The Negro's church,.

82 The Negro's Church not distinctly so. They are neither this-worldly nor otherworldly and warrant a classification somewhere between the two. This classification includes the theological, doctrinal, or cultural sermon. It is an exposition about God, Jesus, the sacraments, or some abstract virtue. One example follows: Text-"This Do in Remembrance of Me." There are two sacraments only-The Lord's Supper and Baptism. The Church of Rome has five more which make seven. We find in the original language the word translated Sacramentum which in our version is a mystery. It reveals secrets.... The sacrament of the Lord's Supper in common with the sacrament of Baptism is an action and has all the sanctification of an oath. Taking it, the communicant swears that he will keep his part of the Covenant and, listen friends, God will keep his part and if the Covenant is broken, it is not on the part of God. It is on our part, and if we fail to keep the covenant, it is not God's fault. This use, therefore, has no relation to any covenant engagement with God and man.... The Sacrament or Lord's Supper is first the badge of Christianity. Unworthy persons often wear the badge but the badge does not make the man. It increases the hypocrite's condemnation. You know slanderers wear this badge. A man who will take of this sacrament and go off and slander his brother or sister is not helping his brother but is hurting himself. Every Christian ought to wear the badge. It is essential. If he is not fit or not worthy to wear this badge, he ought to leave the church. It is a confession and what is that confession-I belong to Christ. It is more than a badge. It is a sign of grace and good will of God to us. It is a sign of his works in redeeming us, of the obligation of the soul and of the beauty of love. There are so-called Christians in the church who dislike each other and who say I do not like to commune with him, I do not like to eat with him. As we come this morning and partake of this sacrament, remember, it is love and fellowship not only with our sister and brother, but with Jesus Christ. It is more than a badge of protection. It is a sign. Hear me
