The Negro's church,.

APPENDIX I Methodology The work required to achieve the results presented in this volume invc lved several separate but related procedures. In order that churches in both the North and the South should be represented, cities in these sections were chosen on the basis of certain criteria. Among these were geographical location; center of industry or production; size of city, including Negro population; central or key city to a large area; racial stratification; point of concentration for Negro migration; crime records, educational center for Negroes; and religious complexion. It is generally known, for example, that Atlanta, Ga., is important commercially because it is the southern central distributing point for a large number of manufacturers and producers who sell to a national market. It is also a center for Negro higher education in the South. On the other hand., New Orleans, La., the largest city in the South, comprises racial stratifications similar to those of Charleston, S. C.; but in addition it has a religious complexion almost all its own. In selecting the rtiral places to be studied it was thought best to take the entire county as a unit. Counties were selected on the basis of Negro population, industry or special types of farming, geographical location, and probable number of Negro churches. The budget of the study allowed for at least fourteen months devoted to field work and the collecting of data, and ten months to the preparation of the material for publication. Within the time scheduled for the field work it was thought that twelve urban and four rural places could be studied. The twelve urban places selected were: Atlanta, Ga.; 295
