CHAPTER IX Fellowship and Community Activities Many churches make use of fellowship activities among their own members, and community activities outside the church, as means of furthering the development of their members and rendering a service to the people of the entire neighborhood. The fellowship activities include clubs and recreational work for the different age- and sex-groups. While all of these are in a way social, some emphasize either the financial or the educational interests of the church. They also include interchurch relations, which are generally embraced under the term "comity." The community activities include various types of social service, such as work to reduce juvenile delinquency. Fellowship Activities In the fellowship activities especially, the churches develop a sense of family unity among the members and satisfy the hunger of the youth for recreation and sociability, and of newcomers for friendship. These activities also provide opportunities to enlist and train the members in various ways. CLUBS Organized clubs for educational, social and financial purposes are found in almost every church. Of the 609 urban churches studied, 348 reported an average of six clubs each. Usually the larger the church the larger the number of clubs. In a church with heavy financial responsibilities, the number of clubs may exceed the number found in another church with the same number of members but without heavy financial burdens.
