128 The Negro's Church jectives and policies adopted by the official actions of the school were recorded, together with facts about growth and use of equipment, teachers' reports, methods of work, social activities, church-membership of pupils, other signs of religious growth, and the like, a better check on the achievements of the school would be possible. LEADERSHIP OF THE SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL The leadership of the Sunday church school logically begins with the pastor of the church. In most churches, however, the details of the teaching and supervisory work are made the responsibility of voluntary lay leaders. The study reveals that three churches had employed directors of religious education. Educational Preparation for Leadership-The roster of workers in the church schools consists of directors of Christian education, general and departmental superintendents, secretaries, treasurers, teachers, and assistants. There are 7,013 persons identified with the leadership of the 608 Sunday church schools. Study of their training shows that 46 per cent. were grade-school, 41 per cent. high-school, 4 per cent. normal-school, and 9 per cent. college people. Experience-Ministers everywhere report that they have a difficult task getting persons professionally or technically trained to accept work in activities like the Sunday church school. Study of the general and professional experience shows that of the 7,013 workers in the 608 schools studied, 5 per cent. were public-school teachers; 3 per cent. were physicians, lawyers, business men, mail carriers, Y. M. C. A. secretaries, chemists, nurses, social workers and morticians; and 92 per cent. housewives, common laborers, domestics, and public-school students. Selection of Workers-Considerable care often governs the selection of workers for the Sunday church schools.
