Some time elapsed, perhaps six months, without the notary's nose giving any intelligence of the man who furnished it. But one day when our man of law, together with his head clerk, was deciphering the parchments of a rich and noble family, his gold spectacles broke in the middle, and fell on the table. This little accident did not disturb him much. He took up an eye-glass with a steel spring, and sent his spectacles to the quai des oifevres, to be exchanged. His optician, M. Luna, took the trouble to send a thousand excuses, with a pair of new spectacles which broke, before twenty-four hours had passed, in the same spot.
