It is roughly estimated that some I50,000 horses were placed at the disposal of the military authorities. Some of them must have bought new horses to make up their losses, as the decrease in the number of horses used in farming is said to have been some 40,000. It should be noted in this connection, also, that numbers of cattle were butchered for military use, and it is estimated that the cattle for farming decreased by some 50,000, bringing up the total of the decrease in horses and cattle to some IOO,OOO.
