ALFABA ALIF AB'AD A MALAY-ENGLISH DICTIONARY. The letter alif; the alphabetical symbol for the number I in the abjad, q. v. aba. I. Glow, warmth, C. and S.; (Kedah) behaba, v. haba. II. The smallest imaginable atom; C. and S. (= fnmma?) III. Also abah, q. v. aba. Arab. Father. Cf. abz. iba'. Arab. Refusal; rejection; disobedience; unwillingness. To these purely Arabic letters are added the following non-Arabic letters: - t X ibtida'. Arab. exordium. Beginning; commencement; Hur4fu 'l-ibtida': expressions used to open a sentence. Lil'ibtidd': to begin with; firstly; = sabermola. abtar. Arab. Curtailed; docked; shortened in the tail. abjad. [Arab.: a composite word made up of the first four letters of the alphabet arranged in their ancient order.] The alphabet following the old order of the letters-an order still observed in Hebrew; the numerical alphabet, each letter having a successive numerical value, viz.: 7,oo 6,00ooo 5,oo 4,ooo 3,000 2,000 These numerical values of the letters are much used in calculating horoscopes and in other methods of divination..I\ abad.
