At.) sTrek. I. To be frightened off; to give up
a bad or risky practice in consequence of
fright or warning. Ta'-akan serek luka makan
di-tajak esok ka-bbedang juga kita: we must
not be frightened away by wounds from the
scythe, we must go to the padi-fields just the
same to-morrow; the dangers attendant on
earning a livelihood cannot frighten us away
from earning one; Prov., see J. S. A. S., I.,
96. Supaya serek yang lain: that the others i
may be frightened off; Ht. Best.
II. (Onom.) A sharp cracking sound.
Setrak-serek::the noise made by the cracking
of the joints of the ankle or thumb.
III. (Kedah.) The stick on which a fishing line is wound.,i 3 strok. I. A measure of capacity representing about ten gantang.
II. (Onom.) A cracking sound, duller
than serak or serek. Serok-serak: repeated
crackling noises of varying intensity, e. g.,
heard either in the jungle when branches
crack and fall under the force of the wind or
when a number of people are cutting their
way through the forest.

similar appearance or colour, e. g., of a black
cloud against a gloomy sky.
ser6gah. Mitye'regah: to startle any one
with a sudden sound or movement; Ht. Ind.
Meng.
s6rul. Loose, not sticking together, (of
grains of boiled rice).

III. Makan serok: (Kedah) to eat insufficient food, to rise somewhat hungry from a
meal.

serekai. Rinsing out, wringing out, squeezing the liquid out of anything.

of Indra; heaven generally; the abode of the

y'u srgl1ang or s6r8ling. A pit-fall, a trap on
the principle of the pit-fall. Kelak termasok
di-dalam sarcling: he perhaps will fall into
the trap; Ht. Gul. Bak., 17. Sre'lang in
Kedah; serealing in Rian and Johor.
OIr sr6blum. (Kedah.) Slipping bracelets over
one's hands on to one's wrists; putting on a
coat from below and thrusting one's arms
into the sleeves; slipping into a sarong by
holding it over one's head and dropping its
folds round (,ne, in contradistinction to
stepping into it (sarok).

terbit teserelah saperti nmuka per1gmpuwan yang
baik paras: the moon rose glowing white like
the face of a lovely woman.
s6ram. To stand on end, of the hair; to
stiffen, of the muscles; to thrill, of the skin;
-usually as the result of fear. Di-tengkok
hamba pun seram rasa-nya: my neck feels stiff;
Ht. Gh. Terlalu seramt rasa-nya bulu roma-ku
tengkok-kut ini: my hair and neck are quite
stiff (with fright); Ht. Koris.
