I) rtim. [Arab. and Pers.] "Rome "; a geographical expression vaguely indicating (in
Malay writings) the territories once comprised in the Roman Empire of the East, but
applied indiscriminately to those territories
whether under Macedonian, Roman or
Turkish rule. Raja Ru m: the Ruler of the
Levant; the Emperor of the East.
I.) roma. [Skr. roma.] The fine hairs growing
on the body; the down on the skin. Bulu
roma: the hairy tegument of animals such
as the horse or monkey which cannot be said
to be furred. Liyang r.: the pores.
Buiu liyang rotma: the hair, pores, and down
on the body; " every hair on the body" in
expressions such as "every hair on his body
stood on end;" Ht. Sh. Kub. Bulu roma
berdiri: the hair standing on end-a sign of
extreme terror; Sh. Peng., 5. Liyang roma
kaluwar peloh-nya the pores gave out their
perspiration; Ht. Hamz., 86; cf. also Ht.
Hamz., 58. Sa-bgrat roma di-badan: as heavy
as the down on the body (of no weight at all);
Prov., Ht. Koris.
(')) ruwam. A small pustule or pimple affecting
children; a kind of prickly heat. M truwam:
to be afflicted with this.
S') rumal. [Pers. JL.] A scarf, a handkerchief. Sapiu tangan r.: id., Ht. Isk. Dz.
Better ramal, q. v.
'-V: rumit. Slow; deliberate in one's work.
jj romok. Physical depression; the feeling and
appearance of being out of sorts. Merontok:
to look and behave as if one were ill.
C).) roman. I. Appearance; shape; figure;
look; the body (= romta-an?). Sejok-nya
masok sakaliyan roman: its coolness permeates
the whole body. Dagangan berbagai roman:
goods of various forms; miscellaneous merchandise; Sh. Jur. Bud., 22. Terlalu endah
di-pandang roman: her form was very fair to
see; Sh. Bid., 9.
Peroman: general appearance. Lembut
dengan laku-laku lezmbt dingan peroman-nya:
gentle in her manners and gentle in her
looks.
II. Padi-stalks after the padi has been
threshed off them; padi-straw; Muj., 53.

III. Tampang rotman: the name given to
an obsolete medium of exchange in the form
of small solid tin blocks, like the jongkong,
but not indented as the jongkong was; a solid
jongkong.

dude; Prov. Rumal tarbakar tikus habis
katlwar: the house was burnt and the mice
got away; a man burnt down his house to

Ibu r.: the main portion of a Malay house.
Isi r.: family and dependents; household.
Berumah: to set up a household of one's
own; to marry; entrer en menage. Patut sudah
berrumah: it is about time that she were
married; Ht. Gul. Bak., 37.

II. Poured out-of liquid or viscous substances, or of many articles being poured out
en masse. Tumpah ruwah: id. (intensitive);

Ruwahkan: to pour out; to upset out; Ht.
Mash., 64.
III. Bulan ruwah: [Arab. r\. ] a popular
name for the month Shaban because of the
arwdh festival held during that month.
