chdrana. [Skr. charanat.] A kind of bowl I
or deep salver in which are placed the various
vessels containing the various requisites for
betel-chewing.
MIenyorongkan cherana: to pass round the
betel-nut tray.
Sireh sa-che-rana: a sireh-bowl; a bowlful of
betel-chewing requisites.
Bekas pinang is the word most commonly
used in colloquial language, but cheraina is the
literary word; Ht. Abd., 30, 416; Ht. P.J.P.;
Ht. Ind. Nata; Sh. Raj. Haji, i84; Sh. Sri
Ben., 25; Sh. Bur. Nuri, 23, etc.
chirani. A rich kind of cloth or muslin used

reviling. Kena chericha petang pagi: to be
abused evening and morning-as a child in
the hands of an ill-tempered mother. Dicherecha-nya akan baginda: he abused the
king; Ht. Best.
The form cherachak also occurs.

d\3J~ chdridawan. I. (Riau.) The noise of
many people calling to each other; the sound
of many children crying; the cries of fowls or
animals, if loud and numerous; vocal (as
distinct from instrumental) sounds or music.
II. (Kedah.) A tree the sap of which is
used as an eye-medicine.
^?rJ - cher6das. I. (Kedah.) A whip used for
flogging buffaloes.

allows more light to penetrate, cf. terang; a
clearing. Pelandok di-cherang rimba: a dwarfdeer in a clearing; a proverbial simile for a
bewildered person; J. S. A. S., XXIV., 96.

the note of the punggok is heard in the thinner
parts of the forest when it is infatuated with
the brilliancy of the full moon.
II. Cherong-cherang: (Onom.) The sound
of ornaments such as brass bracelets or
anklets knocking against one another as their
wearer moves.

- ch6ranggah or chdronggah. Branching in
all directions into points-as the horns of a
deer of many tine.
